Former Ghanaian Hiplife star OJ Blaq has transitioned to gospel music after recovering from a serious battle with kidney failure, a journey he attributes to his faith.
Known legally as Andy Alexander Nii Akrashie, OJ Blaq gained recognition with his 2009 hit "Chale Wote," featuring Captain Planet and Asem, while signed to Lynx Entertainment. He also ventured into acting, appearing in the television series "Sun City."
His career took a dramatic turn when he faced double kidney failure, requiring dialysis. According to the artist, his recovery was miraculous. "No family member, musician, or any of my friends donated a kidney to me, hence God gave me a fresh kidney," OJ Blaq stated in an interview with Accra-based Happy FM. He reports being in good health now.
This life-altering experience prompted a shift in his musical direction. In 2022, he released his debut gospel track, "His Presence," under the Oracle of Jesus label.
His latest offering is the single "I Am Blessed," featuring Kingzkid, noted as the first African gospel artist to win Best International Act at the 2019 Gospel Academy Awards. The upbeat track, produced by Laxiobeats, speaks of divine blessings.
A music video for "I Am Blessed," directed by KP Selorm, was released on YouTube on November 8, 2021, and has since accumulated views online. Both the song and video are available on major digital streaming platforms.
OJ Blaq's move from secular Hiplife music to gospel marks a significant change for the artist, reflecting his stated commitment to his faith following his health ordeal.
